"We Cannot Direct the Wind, But We Can Adjust the Sails" - Cora L. V. Hatch, 1859

The first time I got too close to the unexpected vertigo of a steep chasm, I was sitting on the neck of a huge elephant that decided to duck his head to eat some leaves from branches that appeared on the sharp edge of that mountain. I felt surrendered to the mercy of fate. "I'm going to fall here," I told myself. "And I'm going to die now," I added. But then I thought that if I was going to fall on that rocky abyss while the elephant enjoyed his breakfast, it would be better if I opened my arms like a bird. Maybe I could shake them and fly. Perhaps, I could land on a protruding rock full of feathery leaves that would soften my blow. Or, probably, I would die. But I had chosen to die embracing the sky, embracing the life I had lived, flying freely as I had always dreamed with a huge smile of gratitude that would definitively erase the grimace of fear that had tried to appear. Well, just in time, the elephant lifted its head, and we both continued on the path of life.

Change, before you have to.- Jack Welch

The first time I read this inspiring message from Jack Welch, I was in Manhattan leafing through his book in a bookstore. Since then, in 1992, I used it as my personal mantra. Something to remind me of the impermanence of things; the temporality of everything we are and inhabit, including our jobs and our relationships with others. "Change before you have to," prepared me to design several life alternatives to always have ready: Plan A, Plan B, Plan C, Plan D . . . After all, life is change, and with our natural adaptive behavior, it is better to let us go with the flow through the most adverse winds. Surviving the process of our constant transformation is a gift that every human brings with his nature. Even though we are not always aware of the infinite possibilities of our positive changes, I share it here because I have survived so many times from what some have called failures, but which I have called challenges. These have allowed me to continue my evolutionary journey, learn from it, and teach them to those who would like to be as inspired as I have always been.

Writer

Don’t tell me the moon is shining; show me the glint of light on broken glass.- Anton Chekhov

I don't consider myself a writer but a typist that writes what I hear and see. There is a dimension beyond my own self that puts me in touch with ideas, stories, characters, dialogues. Many of these characters, and their conversations, would have never occurred to me if they had not told what they wanted to share; whispering in my ear. Even when I sit down to write a script for a commercial, I watch the story pass in front of my eyes. Then, I just write it. And because I write, people call me "writer"; a more acceptable label than presenting myself by saying: "Oh no, I'm just an interpreter of a reality that transcends the dimensions of my human being.”  Will they be the muses? I don't know. But I love to receive the company of the most diverse characters - according to the stories I have to write.

I write for myself, and I write as a ghostwriter for others: all kinds of literature, fiction, non-fiction, creative strategies, slogans, print, articles, including feature screenplays.

I am grateful for this gift that allows me to love what I do and live from it.

Educating the mind without educating the heart is no education at all.- Aristotle

In my early years, I was a lazy student. I wanted to play more, and studied little resulting in terrible grades. The only subject I loved to learn were languages only because the teacher was a devoted and sweet woman. One evening, I opened the Biology book for an exam I had the next day. I suddenly became passionate knowing everything about "the  cell." I read the entire chapter over and over throughout the night. I didn't have time to study other sections. To my fortune, the Biology teacher, who distrusted me, isolated me alone on a bench, so I could not copy any answers from other students.

She looked at me and said: "Theme: 1, Chapter :"The cell." THE CELL! I started writing without stopping. I was so excited. The teacher looked at me, surprised as no one was around me to pass me any information. I was the only student who got an A +. But from that moment on, something extraordinary happened between that teacher and I: "we started respecting each other." It was the bond that was created in us that made me a studious and a dedicated student. When I teach languages to my students, I seek that we first learn together the path of our bond. Our two hearts associated with the mission of learning. And it becomes a happy experience for both parties. They learn from their essential and unexplored skills involving their hearts in what they do.

If you only have a hammer, you tend to see every problem as a nail.- Abraham Maslow

Many scientists agree with the idea that intelligence capabilities should not be evaluated only in tests for solving new problems is because it has been proven that intelligence is also manifested in our abilities to solve the most diverse issues, such as:

  • The ability to tolerate and overcome frustrations.
  • Lead long-term projects.
  • Adaptation to new circumstances of life-modifying our habits towards new skills more in line with these new challenges.
  • Do not collapse before the first shakes we receive, and if we do, know that  we can re-create from scratch as many times as necessary.
  • Plan a life in contexts of continuous welfare states.
  • Each time we learn, we produce new neural connections that expand our network of creative possible applications.
  • No age should limit new learning. No age, nor any circumstance should prevent us from stimulating the development of potential intelligence and the acquisition of new skills.
  • While it is a property of our brain to have greater flexibility at an early age, we can also stimulate our brain to learn new tasks, even at any age.
